Itinerary
Distance: 4.8 kilometers (3 miles)
Habitat: Rainforest
Your adventure begins at the Lemosho Gate, located on the western side of Kilimanjaro. You'll be driven here from Arusha, where you'll likely have started your trip. After registering at the gate, you'll embark on a trek through the lush rainforest, teeming with birdlife and colorful flora.
Mti Mkubwa Camp is nestled amidst the towering trees, offering a tranquil place to spend your first night on the mountain.
Distance: 17 kilometers (10.5 miles)
Habitat: Shira Plateau (Moorland)
Day two involves a more significant hike as you leave the rainforest behind and enter the Shira Plateau. The landscape transforms into a vast moorland, dotted with volcanic features like Shira Caldera. Keep an eye out for wildlife like black and white colobus monkeys and klipspringers.You'll camp overnight at Shira 1 Camp, situated on the plateau with stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
Distance: 8 kilometers (5 miles)
Habitat: Semi-desert
Day 3 is a shorter trek, allowing for further acclimatization. You'll continue across the Shira Plateau, passing Shira 2 Camp and eventually reaching Lava Tower, a solidified volcanic extrusion.

As you reach higher altitudes, the air will become thinner, and the temperature will drop considerably. But the effort will be worth it as you witness the spectacular sunrise from the peak of Uhuru, the highest point in Africa.
